ANNA LEE

My name is Anna and my relatives call me Liezl. I love food, art, and all things spiritual.

What was your very first tattoo and what motivated you to get it done?

  • My first tattoo was basically a 'tramp stamp' (as some may say). I was 17 and hanging out with some new friends in London, England. I lied about my age and managed to get a little phoenix tattoo with the word happiness (in Japanese). This was probably not the best decision, but also definitely not the worst one I've made in my life.

How many tattoos do you currently have? Which one was the most recent?

  • I have about 9 and a sleeve. My most recent was the addition of fern leaves to my existing rose.

What have been some of the inspirations behind the other tattoos that you have? Do you typically have an idea in mind before reaching out to a tattoo artist to get work done?

  • I have tattoos inspired by my life experiences, my spiritual journey, and my culture. I also have tattoos completely based on my love for the tattoo artist. Sometimes I see really amazing flash and I just want it on my body.

What type of tattoo styles have you gotten done and what do you like about those particular styles?

  • I'm all over the place with styles: realism, modern, Americana, Japanese, color, black and grey. Despite different styles and genres, I like it when the artist is excited about the design, and they feel confident about the piece. That always leads to a really awesome experience, as well as an awesome tattoo.

Do any of your tattoos hold any personal meaning to you that you’d like to share?

  • I have one booked this year with an artist that I've been adoring for a long time now, Jin Li. It’s going to be the head of a kalabaw/carabao. This upcoming piece is special because it's in connection to my Filipino Heritage and will be completed by an artist I am so excited to work with.

  • This is the most confident I have ever been in my body and this is the happiest I have ever been in my life. The tattoo will certainly remind me about this point in my life.

What were some of the most painful spots to get tattooed for you?

  • Anywhere close to my kilikili (armpit).

How do you prefer to pass the time while getting a tattoo done?

  • For my last session, I rewatched Anthony Bourdain’s travel and food shows.

Has having tattoos had any impact in your personal life (for example: having to hide tattoos at work, your family disapproving, etc.)?

  • I absolutely have hidden my tattoos with clothing, but we live in a time now where it is so common and acceptable. I remember being in my early 20’s and being questioned and ID'd by cops at the bar, and of course they had no issues with the people I was with (just me).

Do you have any favourite tattoos?

  • I really don't. I cherish all of them.

Who are some of the tattoo artists that you've been tattooed by?

  • Liz (@lizvenom), Scott (@scottrusnaktattoos), Kait (@cakelintattoos), Freddy (@ayefreydo), Josh (@joshfields_art), Ryan (@ryantattoo) and very soon Jin (@jin_the.foliage).

What tattoo artists would you like to get work done by in the future?

  • Jin (@jin_the.foliage), Marigold (@marigoldasantos), Falefitu (@inkedkulture_canada), Dustin (@dustingonzales.ink), Tober (@compost.smash), Nari (@tattoonari)....the list goes on and on and on!

Do you have an idea in mind for your next tattoo?

  • More flowers, more fruit.
